What Is An MTP And Why It Matters

I recently made a major career shift and in my search for work that brings me alive and is truly transformative I came across OpenExO.
OpenExO is a global community of change makers, thought leaders, innovation specialists, global citizens and simply interesting and nice people who have come together to transform the world for a better future. Individually and as part of the community we are helping people, organizations and governments deliver exponential impact and performance.
The founders of this community studied 100s of organizations over many years to understand what made some of them more successful and scalable and identified 11 characteristics that made a select few 10X or more high impact and growth compared to their peers. They called these organizations Exponential Organizations or ExOs and the 11 characteristics ExO Attributes. While each attribute is important, there is only 1 that is a must-have to begin and sustain your journey to exponential. It is the Massive Transformative Purpose or MTP.
So what is an MTP?
MTP is the higher aspirational purpose that reflects what the organization cares about and how the world will be different as a result of this MTP and the work the organization does. For the MTP to propel you exponentially it needs all 3 ingredients - Massive (is global or beyond in scope or has the potential to be), Transformative (how our planet or at least your industry and community will be different as a result), Purpose (what the organization really cares about).
MTP should excite you and even scare you a bit, you might never fully achieve it, yet it is still worth striving for. At the same time it needs to be authentic and succinct to have a high degree of connection and recollection with as many people as possible.
Still sceptical about the importance of an MTP? Let me show why MTP is where the magic begins.
We all know and history has proven your results are a direct reflection of your thinking. You achieve big things only when you think and aim big. Further humanity’s biggest problems and aspirations are also the biggest business opportunities.
MTP provides you a competitive edge as it helps attract and retain top talent that are fully vested in the MTP. And as people are fully vested, it promotes a cooperative and supportive work environment. It also helps bind the collective imagination and aspirations of people inside and outside (customers, suppliers, investors, etc.) the organization. Everyone involved becomes an ambassador and brings their best self to the table.
When times are tough and they will get tough, MTP helps remind people why the work they do matters and hence provides focus and direction which can be a challenge in tough times.
I hope you are well on your way to internalizing what an MTP is and why it matters and are curious to know how to discover your MTP. Discovering an organization’s MTP is a reflective process that takes you through a series of questions and is best conducted with a representative group in a half or ideally full day workshop.
